Peaceful Postpartum

Helping new parents physically and emotionally recover and heal, with gentle guidance, nourishment and support

A new baby is an exciting time for new parents and their extended families.  This is a time of joy and celebration, but for many, it can also be a time of overwhelm, exhaustion, sleep deprivation and suffering.    In this postpartum period, you deserve more attention and support than ever before.  This is your chance to rest, take care of yourself, regain your health, eat nourishing food and begin to enjoy your mothering journey.

Welcome

IMG-9029.jpeg

I am so happy to have you here.  My name is Leanne, I am a mother, grandmother, Postpartum Doula, Medical Herbalist, Naturopath and Nutritionist.  I support new mothers in the preparation for the fourth trimester,  with in-person support, massage, herbal medicine and nutrition.  I truly believe there is a lack of care for new mothers in the postpartum period, with a myriad of issues on the rise, including thyroid disease, chronic fatigue, postnatal depletion, depression and mental health issues.  My aim is to help new parents prepare for the first few months of birth, gather their village, provide information on nutritious meals, provide physical in-home support to help ease the burden of overwhelm, support healing and recovery with massage and herbal tonics, support with feeding issues and sleep deprivation while helping the new mum feel rejuvenated instead of depleted.

Frequently asked questions

Q. What does a Postpartum doula do and are you present at the birth?

Postpartum doulas are skilled and knowledgeable about the care of mothers in their postpartum period.  They are trained in the  development of infants as well as maternal recovery and adjustment. We provide non-judgemental guidance on newborn care and feeding, assist the mother with physical and emotional recovery, care for baby so mother can care for herself, and provide practical household assistance. I am strictly a postpartum doula and are not present at the birth.

Q. Is this service only for new mothers?

No, not at all. This is a service I provide for all parents after the birth of a baby, whether you are a first time mum, an experienced mum, same sex couple, single parent, adoptive parents, etc.  Although a lot of my work is focussed on the healing after birth, I am there to support all new parents during the exhausting and emotional journey that a new bub brings.

Q. Is a doula the same as a nanny?

No, doula's are there to look after the mother first and foremost, with caring for the newborn when needed.  Sibling care can also be provided if needed, to give mum time to bond with baby, but the goal of the doula is to make sure mum is rested, nourished and relaxed. I usually ask clients to seek outside childcare so I am able to spend my time helping support you and your new baby.

Q. Do they help with breastfeeding?

Postpartum doulas do offer basic breastfeeding support to you if you require it. They can also assist with other aspects of breastfeeding such as pumping, position and latch. *Please be aware that some breastfeeding issues may require more specialised help from a Lactation Consultant.

Q. Is Pregnancy massage safe?

Yes, pregnancy massage is safe in the third trimester (when your doula may start her visits), provided you have had a recent check up with your healthcare provider and there are no concerns with your health ,your pregnancy and your baby.

Q. How soon can I have a massage after I have birthed?

You can receive a Postpartum Massage immediately after the birth of your baby if you have had a vaginal birth and there were no complications that would contraindicate receiving one.

If you have had a Caesarean birth, you need to wait for a doctor’s clearance.  Otherwise, you can receive gentle massage to the neck & shoulders, feet and hands. This would be carried out in a seated, or semi-reclined position, and certain areas are avoided, due to the increased risk of blood clotting following a Caesarean birth.
I can provide instructions on how to self massage in the weeks following birth.

Q. How soon can I start massaging my baby?

Unless there are contraindications (medical reasons a doctor or midwife has not recommended it), you can massage your baby immediately.  It is never too late to begin baby massage.  The best time to massage your baby is in the 'quiet-alert" phase, when you are both relaxed but responsive.

Q. Are Herbal Tincture safe during and after birth?

It is important to only take herbal tinctures that have been prescribed by a qualified Herbalist or Naturopath.  Herbs are wonderful healers and are powerful.  Certain herbs are contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding.  I am a degree qualified Medical Herbalist and have been using herbs on my patients and clients for nearly 20 years.  I only used herbal tinctures that have shown efficacy and safety through evidenced based medicine.  As a Herbalist Doula, we will discuss any issues you may have so I can formulate a tonic that is individualised for you.

Q. Do I need a cleaner as well as a Doula?

That is entirely up to you.  As a postpartum doula, I am not employed as a cleaner.  I am happy to do light housekeeping such as tidying up the main living area, unload dishwasher, washing, change sheets, quick bathroom tidy, to make your home comfortable so you are not overwhelmed with chores.  A cleaner is a great idea for more heavy housework such as mopping floor, toilets, showers, dusting etc.  In our first prenatal visit we will plan your postpartum journey including organising family and friends to help with cleaning chores if desired, or I can recommend a cleaner for you.

Q. What can I expect at each visit?

The first 2 prenatal visits are specifically for planning your postpartum period.  We will use a workbook to plan your vision and goals for a peaceful postpartum journey.  Meal planning and recipes will be discussed.  If you would like (and are able to), a pregnancy massage will be included in both visits. These visits will be 2 hours long.

The Postpartum visits will be 4 hours long and will be tailored to your needs on the day.  They can include:

  • a nurturing massage

  • baby massage

  • time for you to have some relaxation time, .... bath, nap, read, etc

  • bringing you nourishing and healthy snacks

  • emotional support and resourcing

  • support around baby care

  • providing a space and listening ear if you wish to share your birth story

  • holding your baby so you are able to eat (or even take a shower/bath if you wish)

  • support and resources around normal breastfeeding and bottle feeding

  • support with sleep and settling

  • making you a warm drink

  • preparing you a nourishing lunch or meal

  • guiding and supporting you in creating and implementing village of support

  • support in boosting your healthy ‘love’ hormones for mood and breastfeeding

Q. How often do you visit after baby has come home?

Depending on your needs and my schedule, your postnatal visits can be once per week or twice per week.   I prefer to book your vistits from 8am, to give you time to wake, decide if you would like a meal or snacks prepared for lunch or dinner, a massage, washing on etc.  This gives you the afternoon to feel refreshed and know that you have a relaxing evening ahead of you.  I will message you as I am leaving and I am happy to pick up milk etc on the way if needed.  (This can be reimbursed once I arrive).  I work with a limited number of new parents to ensure I am able to provide you with the help you need in a calm and relaxed manner.  You do not need to clean and tidy your house before I arrive!  I fully expect to see you in your pjs, just rising.  There is no judgment from me!

Q. Do you have payment plans?

Yes, I provide payment plans.  As I work with a limited number of parents, a 35% deposit is required on booking to secure your space.  The remainder of the payments must be made prior to visits 2 and 4 post-natal.   Afterpay is also available.

Q. Can your packages be purchased as a gift?

Yes, of course.  As having been a single mother for 10 years, starting when my daughters were babies, I understand that this might be out of reach for some.  I encourage you to talk to your family and friends to think about giving you this gift of time and support.
